A decorated young Marine from Southwest Miami-Dade was killed in action Sunday in Iraq, the military announced Monday. Lance Cpl. Rene Martinez, 20, died during a combat operation against enemy forces in Iraq's al Anbar province. - Miami Herald.

Rene was a friend of mine from my years at Miami Sunset Senior High School. He joined the Corps about a month after graduation, and we all knew it was something he'd wanted to be a part of for a long time. While I disagreed with the reasons the United States committed to the war, I supported Rene, along with my other friends that decided to join the military because they were in it for the right reasons. May you rest in peace.
